Luthendrank

22.14

Luthendrank is a spicy white wine that was drunk in the 1600s to avoid contracting the plague and other infectious diseases.

Named Denmark’s best mead at Mjødens Dag 2023 and with a gold medal at the European competition Mead Madness Cup in 2024.

At Snoremark, we have taken the recipe from the oldest Danish cookbook from 1616. Enjoyed warm, it is a worthy competitor to white mulled wine. Serve with a slice of orange if desired.

Luthendrank is a historically spiced white wine that was drunk in the 1600s and 1700s. The recipe is taken from Denmark’s oldest cookbook from 1616, and Luthendrank is a worthy competitor to today’s white mulled wine.

Today it’s a real comfort drink, but when the cookbook with the recipe was published, Luthendrank was considered a medicine. Back then, deadly epidemics such as the plague were the order of the day. It was believed that the diseases were spread as bad odors, and the remedy to combat the bad, disease-causing air had to be a strong, fragrant drink with strong spices.

At Snoremark, we have chosen a basic apple wine that we have spiced with raw amounts of cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and rose pepper, plus appropriate amounts of honey and sugar.

Although a number of the spices in Luthendrank are antibacterial, we can’t recommend it for disease control like the doctors of the 1600s, but it’s the best white mulled wine we’ve ever tasted. Read more about Luthendrank or listen to the brewmaster present the drink and its benefits

Serving tip: add a slice of fresh orange to the glass and drink with cookies, gingerbread, apple slices, waffles or a piece of delicious chocolate
