In collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark, we have developed an exclusive and very special mead that speaks directly to the National Museum’s beautiful Viking exhibition ‘Join the Vikings – on a raid’.

“Havulves Mjød” is a fantastic tasting mead, silky smooth, with notes of plum, vanilla, caramel, Danish summer and a fresh sea breeze.

The design of this mead is based on the raw materials that we know the Vikings knew and appreciated. We’ve mixed sloe berries with cider apples, reminiscent of Viking apples. Mjøden has drawn on oak shavings, and it is not random shavings, but shavings from Danish oak that have been used to reconstruct the Viking ship Skuldelev 3.

The shavings are then heat-treated to activate the vanillin and caramel flavor of the oak. Each bottle has a small chip in it. Depending on the size, they give each bottle individual flavor notes. The bottles are therefore also individually numbered and the 2022 series is 700 bottles. The bottles come in a beautiful custom-designed gift box.

Description

In addition to its beautiful red color, the Sea Wolf offers a deep, rich and rounded taste experience that goes really well with cheeses, tapas, desserts … or just for a good time.

With Havulven, you get a unique product where every bottle is sequentially numbered. The 2022 vintage is brewed in a series of 700 bottles.

Uniquely, each bottle contains a chip from the reconstruction of the Viking ship Skuldelev 3 from the Viking Ship Museum. The wood shavings give the mead a unique and delicate flavor. They have undergone a process where the oak shavings are heat-treated, which activates the oak’s vanilla, caramel and light smoke flavors.

Havulvens Mead, along with the wood shavings, is brewed with exquisite fruits and berries. We’ve used the classic Danish sloe berry, which gives a lovely full-bodied plum flavor balanced with the acidity from apples and a slight bitterness from juniper berries. All ingredients that you’ll also find in the Viking Age. And it’s fermented with pure Danish flower honey.

Gift idea – if you are willing to share it.

If you’re in the mood to give away your Sea Wolf, it’s a great gift idea for family, friends, colleagues, employees and business associates. Every detail has been taken care of in the overall graphic expression. Sea Wolf Mead comes in a natural-colored rustic gift box with the same fine red printing ink that you find on the label and of course in the mead’s own beautiful color. In addition, there is a hangtag in a nice heavy cardboard and a natural-colored cord in full-grain leather, which explicitly tells about the taste of the mead, as well as the story of both the Skuldelev 3 ship and why we have called the mead ‘Havulven’.

The illustration on the label and gift box with the fearsome wolf comes from the so-called
Cammin box
from the Viking Age. It is on display alongside Denmark’s largest collection of treasures from the Viking Age in the exhibition ‘Join the Vikings – on a raid’. The beautiful elk horn box with gilded bronze bands in the Mammen style. It disappeared during World War 2. World War II in Pomerania in what is now Poland. Unfortunately, it is only known today as a copy.

The National Museum of Denmark has chosen to name the mead ‘Havulven’ after one of the famous ships of the time in the poem about
the naval battle at Svold
in Øresund, where Erik Jarl and Sweyn Forkbeard defeated the Norwegian king Olav Trygvasson ca. year 1000. It also ties in directly with the fantastic Viking exhibition at the Danich National Museum about Bjorn Ironside, who set out on a raiding expedition to the Mediterranean by ship.

The bottle contains 500 ml and has an alcohol content of 16%.
